Our thoughts and emotions are so real to us that we often allow them to define who we are. When our feelings are negative, the mind persuades us through false reasoning that we should continue to wallow there.
In Autobiography of a Yogi, Yogananda presents a startling revelation: “Thoughts are universally and not individually rooted.” What does this mean? Our thoughts are not ours; they merely reflect states of consciousness that exist, eternally. If we can change our level of consciousness, we will find that our thoughts also change. Instead of trying to work with each thought, the more effective way to overcome negativity is to work on shifting our consciousness.
